Brief history of Tenno Sho Autumn
The Tenno Sho(Emperor’s Cup) is a biannual race, taking place in Spring at Kyoto and Autumn at Tokyo. The first running of the Tenno Sho Autumn edition was in 1937 at Tokyo over 2,600 meters and the distance extended to 3,200 meters the following year. The race was not run in 1944 due to war and continued to be abandoned over the next three years. In 1948, the traditional Autumn event was called as the Tenno Sho for the first time. The Tenno Sho Autumn was run over 2,000 meters for the first time in 1984. It was open to 3-year-olds in 1987. The door was opened for foreign-breds and foreign runners, respectively, in 2000 and 2005.
