Outsider takes 2008 Japan Cup

The 41.0 outsider Screen Hero produced a sensational run to win the Japan Cup at Tokyo on Sunday. Italian jockey Mirco Demuro rode the 4-year-old colt to travel the 2,400-meter distance in 2 minutes 25.50 seconds. Second place, a 1/2-length behind, was favorite Deep Sky with Vodka finishing another 3/4-length further behind in third place.

Demuro took Screen Hero to race fifth or sixth place, outside of Meisho Samson, while the leader of the 17 runners was Never Bouchon followed by Cosmo Bulk, Vodka and Matsurida Gogh.

With 200 meters to go, Matsurida Gogh with a while shadowroll got into front. On the outside, Screen Hero was about to blow his late run. On the further outside, Deep Sky labored well. On the inside, Vodka looked to struggle.

At the end, Screen Hero produced his career best run to get past the line first. Deep Sky, the fastest finisher who ran the last 600 meters in 33.80 seconds, took second place. Vodka edged Matsurida Gogh by a head to get third.

Demuro said, "It was a good start that took a good position. Everything went well. I am extremely pleased."

Screen Hero, by Grass Wonder out of the Sunday Silence mare Running Heroine, struggled in the lower class before having sidelined for a year, but he had good races since coming back on the course 4-month ago. Prior to the Japan Cup, Screen Hero gained the first grade victory in the g2 Copa Republica Argentina.

Trained by Y. Shikato and owned by T. Yoshida, Screen Hero has now won 5 in 17 starts. The 250 million yen first purse(added money) of the Japan Cup brought his career earnings into 408+ million yen. Shadai Farm was the breeder of the chestnut colt.

2008 Japan Cup field the strongest ever

The field of the 2008 Japan Cup, including the last 3 Japanese Derby winners and the last 2 Kikuka Sho(Japanese St. Leger) winners, is the strongest ever.

The favorite is likely Vodka, the 2007 Japanese winner who has scored a couple of g1 wins this season. Her recent glory was the narrow victory in the Tenno Sho Autumn.
Multiple g1 winner Meisho Samson, coming off a disappointing finish in the Arc de Triomphe, has yet to score this season, but he could make a big run here.
Matsurida Gogh, who gained a couple of grade stakes victories this season, has not run well on the Tokyo main course. Nevertheless, he could be one of the main contenders.
The representative of the 3-year-old division will be dual g1 winner Deep Sky and Kikuka Sho winner Oken Bruce Lee.

Foreign entries are Marsh Side, Papal Bull, Purple Moon and Sixties Icon.

The first prize(added money) of the Japan Cup is 250 million yen. The post time will be at 3:20 p.m. JST on Sunday, November 30, 2008.

Little Amapola best run in QE II Cup

Under the hand of Christophe Lemaire, Little Amapola performed the best run in her 8th career start when she gained a 1 1/2-length victory in the Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Cup at Kyoto Racecourse on Sunday.

By Agnes Tachyon out of the Commander in Chief mare Little Harmony, Little Amapola took the good inside position throughout the race before grabbing the lead in the stretch. Heavy favorite Kawakami Princess took second, a 3/4-length in front of Bella Rheia.

Right after getting off the gate, Portofino stumbled so that her rider Yutaka Take fell down on the ground. By the way, the riderless horse crossed the line first.

Little Amapola has now won 4 races with 161+ million yen in career earnings for trainer H. Nagahama and owner Shadai Race Horse. Shaidai Corporation was the breeder of the 3-year-old dark bay.

Exciting and thrilling photo-finish in Tenno Sho

The most exciting and thrilling photo-finish has been produced in Tenno Sho history when Daiwa Scarlet and Vodka rushed into the line this afternoon at Tokyo Racecourse.
After an about 15-minute photo examination, the Tenno Sho Autumn glory went to favorite Vodka. A skin of nose behind, second favorite Daiwa Scarlet took second in the 2,000-meter traditional race. The third, another neck back, was third favorite Deep Sky.

Exciting and thrilling part of the race began to arise when the field led by Daiwa Scarlet reached the 200-meter marker after climbing up the stretch hill. Vodka and Deep Sky, running side by side on the outside, hit into front. Meanwhile, Daiwa Scarlet, running along the rail, looked like she was sinking into the crowd, but this filly fought back to keep getting into contention.

In the end, Vodak and Daiwa Scarlet got home at the same level to stop the clock in 1 minute 57.20 seconds for the new course record.

Vodka, a 4-year-old filly by Tanino Gimlet out of the Rousillon mare Tanino Sister, has raced 17 times(7 wins of them) with more than 758 million yen in career earnings for trainer K.Sumii and owner Y.Tanimizu. Country Bokujo in Hokkaido was the breeder of the bay filly.
