Vodka thrilling Japan Cup victory

On the finale day at 2009 Tokyo meeting, Vodka held off Oken Bruce Lee by a nose to win the Japan Cup in photo finish on Sunday afternoon. A 1 1/2-length behind the runner-up, Red Desire was second with Conduit(IRE) finishing another 1 1/4-length back in fouth. Christophe Lemaire was the winning jockey to complete the 2,400-meter trip in 2 minutes 22.40 seconds on firm grass.

Having taken a good position at fourth place early on, Vodka pulled away from the pack outside 200 meters from home right after Lemaire gave her a go-sign. Oken Bruce Lee with Hiroyuki Uchida up came from the last to challenge and rapidly got up close in her at an evey step he made. The two went toe-to-toe with each other to the finish line.

Conduit, who got off a poor start, had a good finish, but never threatened the first two at the end.

Quotation from C. Lemaire:
I was not sure we got the winning post because Uchida's horse(Oken Bruce Lee) finished so fast at the line. She was calm and the pace was good enough for her. I kept her energy to save the last 200 meters. I was confident with her.

Complete finishing order: Vodka, Oken Bruce Lee, Red Desire, Conduit(IRE), Air Shady, Eishin Deputy, Just As Well(USA), Meiner Kitz, Reach the Crown, Never Bouchon, Scintillo(GB), Cosmo Bulk, Inti Raimi and Intepatation(USA)(dead heat), Asakusa Kings, March Side(USA) and Yamanin Kingly

Vodka has now gained seven grade one victories at JRA with 10 wins in 25 career starts. Her career earnings improved 1.3+ billion jp yen.
