Success Brocken puts his neck in front to win February S

Success Brocken put his neck in front at the line to win the February Stakes(g1) Sunday afternoon at Tokyo. A head in front of favorite Kane Hekili, Casino Drive(USA) finished second in the field of 16.

Espoir City(USA) made the running, clocking the first 1000-meter in 58.80 seconds. Casino Drive was right on the heels of the leader. Success Brocken trailed a step behind. Kane Hekili followed in fouth spot.

A thrilling battle of the three was wrapped by Success Brocken, who put his neck in front to get up the line. The final time of the 1,600-meter dirt race was the new track record of 1 minute 34.60 seconds.

Success Brocken, by Symboli Kris S out of the Sunday Silence mare Success Beauty, is trained by H.Fujiwara and owend by T.Takashima, who also bred the colt.

2009 February Stakes Field

16 horses have been entered for this Sunday's February Stakes at Tokyo Racecourse.
The main contenders are:
Dirt champion Kane Hekili, winner of the g1 events last 3 outings, seeks his 8th g1 glory. Any horse has yet to reach that number of g1 victory.
Vermilion, who finished behind Kane Hekili last two runs, attempts to finish the reversal order.
Casino Drive could show a good prep run before taking on the Dubai World Cup race.
Ferrari Pisa coming off a couple of grade victories could reproduce another good run in the top company.

Brief history
The first February Stakes was run in 1981 and upgraded to g2 in 1994. The race gained a g1 status in 1997 and was open to eligible NAR horses in the same year. There are only two dirt events in JRA program to hold a g1 status. The February Stakes is one of them and the other is the Japan Cup Dirt.
