2009 Sprinters Stakes nomination


A total of 42 horses including the only foreign entry, Scenic Blast(AUS), remain in the final nomination stage for the 2009 Sprinters Stakes to be run on October 4th at Nakayama.

Sleepless Night, who was considered as the major player in the grade one 1,200-meter race, has been retired due to tendon injury.

Matsurida Gogh wins All Comers in front-running fashion


Matsurida Gogh won the Sankei Sho All Comers in front-running fashion at Nakayama on Sunday. He won it by a decisive 2-length from favorite Dream Journey with another head behind Shingen third.
Veteran rider Norihiro Yokoyama send Matsurida Gogh into the front position from the start and they were never behind during the 2,200-meter turf trip. They stopped the clock at the line in 2 minutes 11.40 seconds.


I Ko Piko upsets Kobe Shimbun Hai in record time

I Ko Piko, the 24.0 7th favorite in the field of 14, had an upset victory in the Kobe Shimbun Hai by making a splendid rally in the home stretch.
A 2-length behind, Reach the Crown got second with Seiun Wonder finishing another 3/4-length back in third.
I Ko Piko, who faced the top-rated 3-year-old colts for the first time, showed a great finishing kick to get the line in 2 minutes 24.20 seconds, the new course record for the Hanshin 2,400-meter turf race.

Dream Jourey resumes 2009 campaign in All Comers


Dream Journey resumes his 2009 campaign when he faces the 14 rivals in the Sankei Sho All Comers on Sunday. He has shown a good run of form this season with the Takarazuka Kinen(g1) victory on his latest effort.
Shingen, who gained the grade wins in his last two starts, could be the one to keep an eye on in the race.
Eishin Deputy, winner of the 2008 Takarazuka Kinen, makes his 2009 debut after having been sidelined for more than one year. This horse had a sensational run last season. Matsurida Gogh runs well at his favorite course.

Broad Street wins Rose S in record time


Broad Street, ridden by Shinji Fujita, came with an splendid finishing kick on the middle to win the Rose Stakes(g2) on Sunday afternoon. The final time for the 1,800-meter distance was 1 minute 44.70 seconds on firm ground.
As expected, race favorite Red Desire displayed a great acceleration, but she finished a neck behind in second.

Broad Street is a 3-year-old bay filly by Agnes Tachyon out of the Cozzene mare Phila Street and has now won four in seven starts.

Nakayama Festa makes good start in St. Lite Kinen

Having placed fourth in the Japanese Derby on his last start, Nakayama Festa made a good start for his Fall campaign, winning the St. Lite Kinen(g2) at Nakayama. He won it by a 1/2-length from Sacred Valley. Race favorite Admire Major finished fourth in the 18-horse field of the St. Lite.

Nakayama Festa, a 3-year-old bay colt by Stay Gold out of the Tight Spot mare Dear Wink, has gained third victory of his six races.

*Stimulation(IRE) has been nominated for the Swan Stakes.

*Masterofthehorse has been out of the Mainichi Okan and the Kyoto Daishoten.

*Sacred Kingdom(AUS) and Enthused(NZ) have not run in the Sprinters Stakes. As the result, Scenic Blast(AUS) is now the only foreign nomination for the grade one sprint race.

Admire Major likely major player in St. Lite


Admire Major could be likely the major player when he faces the 17 colts in the St. Lite Kinen, one of the major preps for the Kikuka Sho(Japanese St. Leger), at Nakayama on Sunday. The Agnes Tachyon colt was a maiden horse 4-month ago, but he comes into the St. Lite off a 3-winning streak.

Captain Thule wins Asahi CC


Captain Thule, winner of the 2008 Satsuki Sho(Japanese 2000 Guineas), made up lost time to win the Asahi Challenge Cup(g3) at Hanshin on Saturday. Captain Thule and Break Run Out(USA) made an exciting duel throughout the stretch before Captain Thule put his neck in front at the line. Captain Thule is a 4-year-old colt by Agnes Tachyon out of the Tony Bin mare Air Thule.

Ultima Thule romps Centaur S
Ultima Thule, a half sister to Captain Thule, romped the Centaur Stakes, the main feature at the Hanshin Sunday meeting. Race favorite Sleepless Night, a 2 1/2-length behind the winner, finished second in the 1,200-meter race.
Ultima Thule is a 5-year-old mare by Fuji Kiseki.

Zarema takes Keisei Hai AH
The Keisei Hai Autumn Handicap was won at Nakayama on Sunday by Zarema, who beat Updraft by a 1 1/2-length. Zarema is a 5-year-old mare by Dance in the Dark out of the Zafonic mare Shenck.

Captain Thule could produce a good run in Asahi CC


Captain Thule looks to show his old good form in the Asahi Challenge Cup at Hanshin on Saturday. The 2008 Satsuki Sho winner, who finished a respectable fourth in his last outing of the Sekiya Kinen coming off more than one year layoff, could produce much better run this time.

Sleepless Night could be the one to keep an eye on in Sunday's Centaur Stakes. The last time we saw her on the course was earlier this season in the Takamatsunomiya Kinen where she finished a splendid second. Generally, the 5-year-old mare runs well when fresh.

JRA Fall Meeting Starts This Weekend


The Fall meeting at the JRA major tracks will start next weekend. To begin with, Hanshin Racecourse hosts the grade 3 Asahi Challenge Cup on Saturday, September 12th.
The top-rated horses, who took a rest at the farm or the stable, will return to the course this time of the year.


Horse to watch
Agnes Twinkle(USA) made a successful debut when he posted a 1 1/4-length victory in the 1,200-meter maiden race at Kokura on September 6th.
Agnes Twinkle, a 2-year-old colt by Giant's Causeway out of the Affirmed mare Morning Devotion, was sold at the September 2008 Keeneland Sale for 200 thousand US dollars.
