Espoir City outran his 14 rivals in the February Stakes at Tokyo on Sunday afternoon to extend his winning streak at g1 event up to four. The 5-year-old chestnut horse has now won nine of his 11 dirt races(10 wins in 18 career starts). His career earnings brought up to 487+ million jp yen.
Laurel Guerreiro led as the reduced field of 15 turned for home. Having kept running in second place, Espoir City cruised up to Laurel Guerreiro, and he got past the leader without his jockey Tetsuzo Sato's hands barely moving on his neck, about 400 meters from home. From there, Espoir City quickly pulled away from the rest as Sato finally drew a whip.
Espoir City galloped to the line in 1 minute 34.90 seconds for the excellent winning time. Test Matta(USA) ran second, a 2 1/2-length back. Success Brocken was third place, another 3 1/2-length further back.
Espoir City, a son of Gold Allure out of the Brian's Time mare Eminent City, was bred by Ikuchise Bokujo(Bokujo means Farm in English). He may go for the Dubai World Cup.

Espoir City makes his first start of the year when he runs in the Februrary Stakes(g1) on Sunday. The dirt champion had the sensational 2009 season, winning 4 in 6 starts with three g1 glories. Regular rider Tetsuzo Sato will take the mount.
Success Brocken has scored a couple of g1 victories last season including the 2009 Feburary Stakes. This horse comes here off a thrilling victory in the Tokyo Daishoten(g1) at NRA Ohi last December.
Laurel Guerreiro, Reach the Crown and Super Hornet have raced well at the highest level on turf. It will be interesting to see how they run on dirt surface.
Other horses to watch will be the Tokyo Shimbun Hai winner Red Spada, the 2009 Japan Dirt Derby winner Testa Matta(USA) and Glorious Noah, winner of the Negishi Stakes.
