Orfevre takes Takarazuka

Orfevre posted a comeback victory in the Takarazuka Kinen on Sunday at Hashin. Prior to the Takarazuka, he finished far behind, a disappointing 11th-place in the Tenno Sho Spring.

Orfevre, the 3.2(11-5) favorite, ridden by Kenichi Ikezoe, rallied on the inside turning into the stretch, and then pulled away to win the 2,200-meter grade one race by 2 lengths in 2 minutes 10.90 seconds.

Rulership came wide into the stretch to finish well for second, a 1 1/4-length before third-placed Shonan Mighty. Another 2 lengths back, Win Variation finished fourth with Mount Shasta fifth in the field of 16.

The 135+ million jp yen first prize improved Orfevre's career earnings to 978+ million jp yen. He has now won 8 of his 14 races for trainer Y. Ikee and owner Sunday Racing Co. Ltd. Shadai Corporation was the breeder of Orfevre, a 4-year-old chestnut colt by Stay Gold out of the Mejiro McQueen mare Oriental Art.

Takarazuka Kinen 2012

Orfevre, winner of the Triple Crown last year, seeks his first 2012 victory when he faces the 15 competitors in the grade one Takarazuka Kinen. The 4-year-old colt is coming off a disappointing 11th-pace finish in the Tenno Sho Spring. He will be ridden by Kenichi Ikezoe and break from post 11.

Rulership is a well-bred horse who has been running well in 2012 campaign. In his last start, he finally seized the first major victory when he won the Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Hong Kong. Craig Williams will take the mount on him for the first time and break from post 7.

To the Glory and Shonan Mighty, who finished first and second in the Naruo Kinen respectively, could make a big run.

Strong Return wins Yasuda in record time

The grade one Yasuda Kinen was won this afternoon at Tokyo by Yuichi Fukunaga-steered Strong Return, who beat Grand Prix Boss by a neck. Another 2-length behind, Cosmo Sensor was third with another 1/2-length away Danon Yoyo fourth.

The firm going and high pace were in favor of Strong Return, who covered the 1,600-meter distance in the record time of 1 minute 31.30 seconds, 0.10 second faster than the previous record set by Danon Chantilly in the NHK Mile Cup on May 9, 2010.

Strong Return has now won 7 of his 19 races for trainer N. Hori and owner T. Yoshida. His career earnings boosted to 310+ million jp yen.

Shadai Farm in Chitose, Hokkaido was the breeder of Strong Return, a 6-year-old bay horse by Symboli Kris S out of the Smart Strike mare Caught Out.

Sadamu Patek Early Favorite For Yasuda Kinen

As of Saturday, Sadamu Patek, winner of the Keio Hai Spring Cup, has been installed as the favorite for the 2012 Yasuda Kinen at odds of 7.1(61-10). Apapane was the second favorite at 8.3(93-10). Strong Return was the fourth favorite at 8.5(15-2) followed by Silport at 9.3(83-10).
The wide-open Yasuda Kinen is expected to produce a thrilling finish.
