Comment after Takarazuka; Gentildonna's trainer

Gentildonna had her worst career performance when she finished ninth in the Takarazuka Kinen. Her trainer S. Ishizuka was unable to explain her poor run in the race. "I don't know why she was well beaten.", he said. After summer rest, she resumes her action, which will be the final campaign.

Matsunaga, trainer of Win Variation, said, "The ground was against him. That's all I can say."
The 6-year-old horse finished a disappointing seventh in the Takarazuka as second favorite.
He will be out of action during summer before running in the top level circuit this fall.

Favorite triumph for Takarazuka

The grade one Takarazuka Kinen wrapped up an overwhelming victory for the 2.7(17/10) favorite Gold Ship, who became the first horse to gain a back-to-back Takarazuka victory in racing history.

Veteran jockey Norihiro Yokoyama, who partnered the winner for the first time, said, "The horse ran smoothly without showing laziness. I just sat on him not to bother him."

Verxina led the field with Fame Game a few steps back in second. Gold Ship advanced into fourth position on the first turn and kept that position with Gentildonna right on his tail. The horses looked like they bunched together when turning for home.

Verxina held the leading position, but Gold Ship was ahead of the leader in a flash down the stretch and got up into the winning post in 2 minutes 13.90 seconds over Hanshin 2,200 meters. The good-to-soft going might have helped the winner.

Second was, a 3-length behind the winner, Curren Mirotic with another 1 1/4-length further away Verxina third.
Gentildonna failed to fire in the stretch, finishing a disappointing ninth.

Trained by N. Sugai and owned by E. Kobayashi, Gold Ship has now registered 11th win in 19 lifetime starts with more than 1.1 billion jp yen in lifetime earnings. Deguchi Farm in Hidaka, Hokkaido was the breeder of the 5-year-old gray horse by Stay Gold out of the Mejiro McQueen mare Point Flag.

Gold Ship favorite for Takarazuka

As of Saturday, Gold Ship has been installed as the 2.9(19/10) favorite for the Takarazuka Kinen. Win Variation was the 3.1(21/10) second favorite. Getildonna was the 4.6(18/5) fourth favorite followed by Meisho Mambo 9.5(17/2).

Gold Ship has a good chance to gain a back-to-back Takarazuka victory if his stamina comes into play. The soft ground would be welcomed.
Win Variation, who had finished second in the grade one event in the four occasions, seeks his first grade one glory.
Gentildonna likes running on the firm ground. Her connections are confident that she is going to run her race. They don't want the ground too soft.
Meisho Mambo, one of the best fillies in her generation, attempts to come out on top in the male grade company.

The 12 runners will go to post at 3:40 p.m. JST on Sunday, June 29.

Takarazuka trends

Surprises are occasional. Three of the last 10 favorites have won. During the last 10 years, the longest priced winner is the 38.5(75/2) 11th pick Sweep Tosho in 2005.

Runners who have raced at Tenno Sho Spring prior to Takarazuka have a good record, recording four firsts, five seconds and two thirds in the last 10 years.

Performance of last time out is important. Last-out winners have finished four firsts, four seconds and three thirds in the last 10 Takarazuka runnings.

One and Only wins Derby in final effort

Enormous racegoers turned up at Tokyo Racecourse on the great Derby day to see an exciting finish of the Japanese Derby, which was won in a final effort by One and Only.

The 17 runners went to post as scheduled, and Ekimae showed the way and got a huge lead throughout the backstretch, but he was pulled up when turning on the final bend. Suddenly, Tosen Stardom, who led a large pack of the horses, took over the leading position.

In the middle of the home strech, Tosen Stardom bumped on the rails, dropping back into rear. For a moment later, Isla Bonita drew out into the front with One and Only trailing on his outside. From there, a thrilling battle of the two began. They fought it out inch by inch for the last 200 meters. The exciting dual battle ended as One and Only got into front in a final effort. A 1/2-length separated the two. Another 1 1/2-length back Meiner Frost was third followed by another neck back Tagano Granpa fourth with To the World fifth.

In the hands of Norihiro Yokoyama, One and Only covered the 2,400-meter journey in 2 minutes 24.60 seconds on firm ground.

One and Only's trainer Kojiro Hashiguchi achieved a long-time ambition to saddle the Derby winner in his 20th Derby runner.
