Decipher takes Epsom Cup

The grade three Epsom Cup was won this afternoon at Tokyo by Decipher, who beat Meiner Lacrima in final stride. Hirofumi Shii guided the winner with a final time of 1 minute 46.20 seconds over 1,800 meters on firm ground.

Within 400 meters to go, a pack of six horses fought for a lead, and then Meiner Lacrima among them drew out with Decipher working his way into challenge on the inside. The two dueled for the last 200 meters.

Finally, Decipher slightly finished in advance of Meiner Lacrima at the line. A head separated the two. Dark Shadow finished another 1 1/4-length behind in third.

Trained by F. Kojima and owned by Sheikk Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Decipher is a son of Deep Impact and the Dubai Millennium mare Mizna. Darley Japan K.K. was the breeder of the 5-year-old horse.

Dia de la Madre wins Mermaid S

Dia de la Madre, trained by K. Sumii and owned by Carrot Farm, produced an impressive late run, winning the grade three Mermaid Stakes for fillies and mares in 1 minute 59.40 seconds over Hanshin turf course on firm.

Cosmo Barbara looked like she was winning the race in the mid-stretch, but Dia de la Madre came with a strong surge to put her neck in front within 100 meters from home, and yet she won by a decisive 1 1/2-length under the control of Kota Fujioka. Cosmo Barbara took second with Hula Bride finishing another 1/2-length back in third.

Bred by Northern Farm, Dia de la Madre is a 4-year-old filly by Kingkamehameha out of the Sunday Silence mare Dia de la Novia.
