Robe Tissage takes Keeneland Cup

Robe Tissage finally ended her losing streak when she landed the grade three Keeneland Cup this afternoon at Sapporo Racecourse. It was the first victory for the 4-year-old filly since Dec. 9 2012 when she took the grade one Hanshin Juvenile Fillies.
Under the hands of Kosei Miura, Robe Tissage rushed into the front near the line, winning the 1,200-meter race in  minute 9 seconds by a neck from Red Oval with another head back third Majin Prosper in a blanket finish.
Bred by Northern Racing, Robe Tissage is a black filly by War Emblem out of Petit Noire by Singspiel.

Musee Sultan wins Niigata Nisai in thrilling photo finish
Musee Sultan won the Niigata Nisai Stakes for 2-year-olds in 1 minute 33.40 seconds at Niigata Racecourse on firm ground. 
Musee Sultan, ridden by Yoshitomi Shibata, pulled away from the crowd within 200 meters to go. Avenir Marcher came with a superb late surge on the outside to challenge. The two produced a thrilling photo finish all the way to the line.

Prior to the grade three Stakes victory, Musee Sultan won his debut at Niigata on Aug. 10. The colt was sold at Select Sale on yearling session last year for 78,750,000 jpn yen(approx. US$787,500).
Bred by Shadai Farm, Musee Sultan is a son of King Kamehameha and the French Deputy mare Ask Deputy.

Japan horse racing news on Aug. 30

Gentildonna will return to action in the Tenno Sho Autumn and run in the Japan Cup after that. "To run her in the Arima Kinen is a possibility.", her trainer Ishizaka said on Tuesday. Her farewell race may be either the Japan Cup or the Arima Kinen.

Taiki Blizzard, winner of the 1997 Yasuda Kinen, died at age 23 after colic on August 18. 

Admire Flight's Australia campaign will be given up, his trainer Hashida commented on August 27.  "He didn't run his race and stopped running during the race." The trainer talked about his poor performance in the Sapporo Kinen.
In the meantime, Admire Rakti and Bande(IRE) runs in the Australian group one races as scheduled. They will leave Japan for Australia on September 19.

Field of Keeneland Cup drawn

A field of the Keeneland Cup is drawn Friday morning.

Red Oval, winner of the non-graded Sapporo Nikkan Sports Hai, drew post 15. Kenichi Ikezoe will ride him.
Grade winner Smart Orion drew post 3. Yutaka Take, who returns to action this weekend after a hand injury, will takes the mount on him.
Robe Tissage with Kosei Miura up drew post 7. Snow Dragon to be ridden by Takuya Ono will break from post 12.

The 16 horses will go to post at 3:25 p.m. on Sunday, August 31.

Keeneland Cup preview

Red Oval has shown a good performance in his recent runs, finishing second in the non-graded stakes on June 21 and following up with victory in the Sapporo Nikkan Sports Hai in early August. He warmed up for the Cup, working a 1,000-meter in 69.60 seconds at Sapporo Racecourse on Thursday morning.

Smart Orion worked at Sapporo Racecourse on Thursday, breezing a 1,000-meter in 69.80 seconds. The winner of the grade three Ocean Stakes earlier this season came at victory in the UHB Hai two weeks ago after failing to make a good result in two starts. 

Robe Tissage, a close second in the grade three Hokkaido Sprint, is looking for her first victory since winning the juvenile grade one race in 2012 season. 

Snow Dragon, second in the Takamatsunomiya Kinen last March, comes off second in the Hokkaido Sprint Cup at NAR Mombetsu. He galloped a 1,000-meter in 66.80 seconds at Sapporo dirt course on Thursday.

The 9th grade three Keeneland Cup is run this Sunday at Sapporo Race Course. A total of 19 horses have been nominated to the 1,200-meter race for 3-year-olds and up.

A total of 18 juveniles have been nominated to the grade three Niigata Nisai Stakes at Niigata Race Course over 1,600 meters on turf.

Comments after Sapporo Kinen

Winning jockey Yuga Kawada quoted:
I gave her an early go-sign on the third turn as the trainer instructed me. 
It was such an early front that we've never had before, so I pressed her to the finish as strong as I can. I am very happy with this result.
"She had her race, but her best has yet to come." H. Matsuda, trainer of Harp Star, commented.

Norihiro Yokoyama on Gold Ship commented: We had a good race. He ran as usual. 
"The race showed that he is a good horse. " Sugai, trainer of Gold Ship, is not pessimistic about the defeat. With a fastest finish, Gold Ship came at a 3/4-length second behind Harp Star, but he finished far ahead of the others. 

The two horses with Just a Way are scheduled to leave Japan for France on September 20.

Harp Star defeats Gold Ship in Sapporo Kinen

Harp Star got off to a good start toward the Arc de Triomphe when she won the Sapporo Kinen in 1 minute 59.10 seconds this afternoon at Sapporo. She beat Gold Ship by a 3/4-length in a strong 14-horse field of the 2,000-meter event. Another 5-length behind came Whale Capture third.

Tokei Halo made the pace with the first 1,000 meters in  58.40 seconds, while Harp Star raced at second to last and several lengths away Gold Ship was the dead last. 

Harp Star made an early move and her position improved on the final turn. Gold Ship chased after Harp Star and moved up a position right behind her. 

Jockey Yuga Kawada forced Harp Star to go into the front right after entering the short home strech. Jockey Norihiro Yokoyama brought Gold Ship to challenge Harp Sar on the outside, but never collared her.

Harp Star, trained at JRA Ritto by Hiroyoshi Matsuda and owned by Carrot Farm, has now won five in seven career starts. Northern Farm was the breeder of Harp Star, a 3-year-old bay filly by Deep Impact out of the Falbrav mare Historic Star.

Harp Star and Gold Ship are both scheduled to run in the Arc de Triomphe for their next actions.

Little Gerda wins Kitakyushu Kinen

Little Gerda(USA) beat Meisho Izayioi by a nose to win the Kitakyushu Kinen this afternoon at Kokura Racecourse. Another 1/2-length further away came Kaishu Columbo third. Kyosuke Maruta was on board the winner, covering the 1,200-meter in 1 minute 7.50 seconds on firm ground.

Bred by Dapple Bloodstock, Little Gerda(USA) is a 5-year-old gray mare by Closing Argument out of the Budda mare Bijoux Miss.

Sunday sees the grade two Sapporo Kinen with a strong field of 14 at Sapporo Race Course.
Gold Ship, one of the best Japanese horses, returns to the course where he raced twice in his freshman campaign. He drew post 5 with Norihiro Yokoyama on his back.
Harp Star regarded as the best 3-year-old filly in the country faces the older company for the first time. Regular rider Yuga Kawada rides her, breaking from post 8.
Front-runner Tokei Halo drew post 6. Classic winner Logtype drew post 1.

Sapporo Kinen preview

 Gold Ship, an impressive victory in the g1 Takarazuka Kinen, showed in good form, breezing at Hakodate Racecourse Wednesday morning. Norihiro Yokoyama, who rode him at the workout, said. "He was in a good mood during the workout." 
 Harp Star, one of the best 3-year-old fillies in the country, warmed up for the race at Sapporo Racecourse on turf on Wednesday, working a 1,200-meter in 80.10 seconds. She ran without a left front shoe in the last 100 meters. H. Matsuda, trainer of the filly, was pleased with the workout. 
Gold Ship and Harp Star have been confirmed to run in the Arc de Triomphe in October.
 Tokei Halo, winner of this race last year who finished a good fourth in the group one Singapore International, is a strong front-runner.  
 Logotype has plenty of time to prepare for this race after finishing sixth in the Dubai Duty Free last March.

A Shin Beatlon romps Summer Champion

JRA-trained A Shin Beatlon led the field of 11 from start to finish, winning the NAR grade three Summer Champion in 1 minute 26.10 seconds at Saga Racecourse on muddy track. Koshiro Take guided the winner to the decisive 5-length victory. Pitch Star ran for second with Tagano Zingaro third.
A Shin Beatlon is a 8-year-old dark bay horse by Brian's Time out of the Horisky mare Laurentian. 

This Sunday's JRA Graded Races

Sapporo Race Course features the 50th Sapporo Kinen for 3-year-olds and up. A total of 15 horses have been nominated to the grade two 2,000-meter turf event. The nominations include Gold Ship and Harp Star.

A total of 22 horses have been nominated to the grade three Kitakyushu Kinen at Kokura Race Course for 3-year-olds and up over 1,200 meters on turf.

Clarente rallies Sekiya Kinen

Clarente rallied on the outside to win the grade three Sekiya Kinen in 1 minute 32.50 seconds at Niigata on firm ground this afternoon. This was his first victory since June 9, 2013 when he triumphed the Epsom Cup.

Within 200 meters to go, Danon Shark and Satono Gallant got away from the rest with Clarente making up ground rapidly, and then Hironobu Tanabe forced Clarente to the front and just strolled home. Danon Shark did his best by finishing a 1/2-length behind in second. Satono Gallant, who recovered from the bad start, finished another 3/4-length away in third.

Clarente(Dance in the Dark - Erimo Pixy, by Dancing Brave) has now recorded six wins in 22 career starts for trainer K. Hashiguchi and owner S. Maeda. North Hills Management was the breeder of the 5-year-old horse.

Japanese Horse Racing News on Aug. 16

Just a Way has retained his top weight of 130 pounds on the Longines World's Best Racehorse Ranking.
He was back to Ritto Training Center after taking a rest on Thursday. Preparation for the Arc de Triomphe where he is scheduled to run next will begin Sunday.

Asia Express, a recent winner of the Leopard Stakes, suffered a bone chip on left radius. The injury might have occurred during that race. He will be out of action for the remaining season.

Sekiya Kinen preview

A total of 17 horses will go for the grade three Sekiya Kinen at Niigata.

Danon Shark, a two-time grade winner at mile, finished a respectable fourth in the grade one Yasuda Kinen last outing. He worked for the race at Ritto Training Center on Wednesday morning, clocking in 55 seconds over 800 meters.
Majesty Hearts, who finished a close third to Sadamu Patek in the Chukyo Kinen on his latest run, had a final warm-up for the race with running a 1,200-meter in 84 seconds flat on Ritto CW course Wednesday.
Clarente, a multiple grade winner who beat subsequent world champ Just a Way in the Epsom Cup last season, has yet to produce his true run this season.
Satono Gallant aims at his first grade success, working a 800-meter in 56.60 seconds at the Miho training course.
Extra End, winner of the grade three Kyoto Kimpai earlier this season, attempts to bounce back from a disappointing finish in the Yasuda Kinen.

The starters will go to post in the Sekiya Kinen at 3:45 p.m. JST on Sunday, August 17.

Sambista romps Breeders' Gold C

Second favorite Sambista romped home in the Breeders' Gold Cup at Mombetsu Thursday night. Yasunari Iwata rode the winning horse to complete the 2,000-meter distance in 2 minutes 7.40 seconds on good track.
A 3-length behind the winner, race favorite Wild Flapper was second with fourth favorite Machan Tamer another neck away third in the field of 14 fillies and mares.

Sambista left Wild Flapper behind in the closing stage after they were in a brief neck-and-neck battle.

Bred by Grand Stud and trained at JRA Ritto by K. Sumii, Sambista is a 5-year-old dark bay mare by Suzuka Mambo out of the Misil mare White Carnival. She has now won six in 16 career starts.

2014 Sekiya Kinen nominations

A total of 27 horses have been nominated to the grade three Sekiya Kinen to be run at Niigata Sunday. The nominations include Danon Shark, Extra End, Majesty Hearts, Satono Gallant and Clarente.

Someries takes g3 Cluster Cup

Sheik Mohammed-owned Someries came on with a strong finish from the second spot, winning the NAR grade three Cluster Cup in 1 minute 7.90 seconds under Yusuke Fujioka at Morioka Racecourse. 
Sweet Jewelry showed an excellent acceleration to finish a neck behind the winner in second with Silk Fortune third and Admire Sagace fourth in the field of 14. The first four are JRA trained horses. 
Bred by Darley Japan, Someries is a 4-year-old filly by Hard Spun out of the Mr. Prospector mare Miss Adorable.

Premier runners' next action

Japanese Derby hero One and Only will be heading for the Kobe Shimbun Hai next month.

Isla Bonita, winner of the Satsuki Sho(Japanese 2000 Guineas) who finished second to One and Only in the Japanese Derby in his latest run, will return to the course for the St. Lite Kinen next month.

Meiner Frost, third in the Derby, will run in either the St. Lite Kine or the Kobe Shimbun Hai.

Gold Ship and Harp Star will clash in the Sapporo Kinen on Aug. 24.

Just a Way will go straight for the Arc de Triomphe without a prep.

Gentildonna will resume her action in the Tenno Sho Autumn early November.

Japanese Oaks heroine Nuovo Record could return to action in the Rose Stakes next month.

Hokko Tarumae and Wonder Acute will run in the NAR JBC Classic in November.

NAR Breeders' Gold Cup

The grade three Breeders' Gold Cup for 3-year-olds and up fillies and mares is run at NAR Mombetsu Racecourse over 2,000 meters on dirt. 14 horse will go to post for the NAR grade three event at 8:05 p.m. JST on Thursday, August 14.

Field of Cluster Cup

A field of 14 runners including five JRA horses is set to run for the grade three Cluster Cup for 3-year-olds and up at NAR Morioka Racecourse.

Admire Sagace, winner of the Hokkaido Sprint Cup, could be the one to keep an eye on. 

The post time of the Cluster Cup will be at 4:30 p.m. JST on Aug. 13.

Asia Express wins easily Leopard Stakes

Asia Express(USA) made a successful comeback off a miserable result in the Unicorn Stakes as he posted a decisive 3 1/2-length victory in the Leopard Stakes this afternoon at Niigata. In his only third start, Cry Smile clung to second with Runway Waltz finishing a neck behind in third.

Given an aggressive ride by Keita Tosaki, Asia Express with a black visor on his face was never out of the third spot before taking the race out in the stretch. The final time for the 1,800-meter distance was 1 minute 50.40 seconds on good track.

Asia Express, a 3-year-old colt by Henny Hughes out of the Running Stag mare Running Bobcats, has now recorded four wins in seven career starts. Ocala Stud in US bred the colt.

Satono Noblesse storms home in Kokura Kinen
Satono Noblesse stormed home at the rainy Kokura Racecourse, winning the 2,000-meter Kokura Kinen fair and square in 1 minute 59.80 seconds on good ground. Martinborough chased the winner down the stretch to finish a 1 3/4-length behind in second. Another 1 3/4-length back Meisho Naruto took third by leading the field from the start.

Satono Noblesse, a 4-year-old colt by Deep Impact out of the Tony Bin mare Cry with Joy, gained his second grade victory in the season following the grade three Kokura Daishoten.

Next week's NAR graded races

The grade three Cluster Cup is run at NAR Morioka Racecourse on Aug. 13. A total of 16 horses including 5 JRA runners have been nominated to the 1,200-meter dirt race. First purse: 23,000,000 jpn yen(approx. 230,000 US dollars)

On the next day, NAR Mombetsu Racecourse features the grade three Breeders' Gold Cup to which 14 horses have been nominated. The Breeders' Gold Cup is for 3-year-olds and up fillies and mares, running over 2,000 meters on dirt. First purse: 25,000,000 jpn yen(approx. 250,000 US dollars)

Stallions to move
Dunkirk(Unbridled's Song - Secret Status, by A.P. Indy), the first crop sire champion of 2013, will be moved to East Stand in Japan from Ashford Stud in US for the 2015 breeding season. The syndicated stallion is scheduled to arrive in Japan October.

Hard Spur(Danzig - Turkish Tryst, by Turkoman) will return to Darley's Jonabell Farm in US for the next breeding season. The 10-year-old stallion has stood only a season in Japan.

Dubai Duty Free winner Just a Way was assigned the top weight of 150 pounds among older horses. Gold Ship received 6 pounds less than Just a Way at 124 pounds with Kizuna at 121 pounds.
Among 3-year-olds, Japanese Derby winner One and Only topped the list with a 119-pound. Satsuki Sho(Japanese 2000 Guineas) winner Isla Bonita received 117 pounds with To the World and Meiner Frost sharing at 115 pounds.

Kokura Kinen preview

The grade three Kokura Kinen is a handicap race for 3-year-olds and up at Kokura Racecourse over 2,000 meters on turf.

Last Impact comes back to the course after a poor run in the Tenno Sho Spring. He won the Kokura Daishoten at the same course earlier this season.

Meisho Naruto, winner of this race last season, carries the top weight of 57.5 kgs coming off the Tanabata Sho victory. He appealed good form at his final workout Wednesday, running a 1,200-meter in 83.60 seconds at Kokura.

Satono Noblesse, who won the grade two event this season, returns to action after a short break. He worked a 1,200-meter in 83.20 seconds at Ritto Wednesday morning.

Leopard Stakes preview

A total of 15 runners will go to post for the Leopard Stakes at 3:45 p.m. JST on Sunday. 

Red Alvis with an impressive victory in the Unicorn Stakes last June worked a 800-meter in 54 seconds on Wednesday morning. This colt could make another big run here.

Asia Express(USA) attempts to make a comeback after running poorly in the Unicorn Stakes. He worked a 800-meter in 52.80 seconds at Miho Training Center Wednesday morning. 

North Shore Beach, fourth in the Japan Dirt Derby, had a final workout for the race, clocking in 53.70 seconds for a 800-meter distance. This colt could dance at the front end.

Asukano Roman has recently displayed good form with the Noubi Tokubetsu victory in his latest effort.

The Leopard Stakes is for 3-year-olds at Niigata over 1,800 meters on dirt.

JRA graded races on Aug 10

The Leopard Stakes for 3-year-olds is run on Sunday at Niigata Racecourse. A total of 22 horses remains on the final entry stage of the grade three 1,800-meter dirt race.

The first run was in 2009. In spite of the short racing history,, the Leopard Stakes has produced subsequent great runners such as Transcend and Hokko Tarumae. 
Transcend, who won it 2009, notched a two-straight-victory in the Japan Cup Dirt. Hokko Tarumae, winner of this contest in 2012, raced in both JRA and NAR circuits and prides himself on his success at grade one event in the five occasions.

A total of 17 horses have been nominated to the grade three Kokura Kinen, held on Sunday at Kokura Racecourse. The handicap race is for 3-year-olds and upward, running over 2,000 meters on turf.

The main Kokura course is a right-handed, turf, 1615.1 meters oval circuit with a couple of small hills, a 293-meter run-in and 30 meters in width. The dirt oval track of 1445.4 meters is inside the main turf course.

Quatre Feuilles wins Queen Cup in record time

Quatre Feuilles won the Queen Cup in an exciting finish by showing an excellent turn of foot. Before the nose victory, she had to deny challenges by Aromatico and Smart Layer. Second was Aromatico, who finished a neck before Smart Layer. Yuichi Fukunaga was aboard the winner, clocking in 1 minute 45.70 seconds for the 1,800-meter course record.
Quatre Feuilles, a 5-year-old bay mare by Deep Impact out of the Tejano Run mare One for Rose, has now won four in 20 lifetime starts.

Seiko Raiko scores his first grade success in IBIS Summer Dash 
Seiko Raiko stormed home winning the IBIS Summer Dash under Yoshitomi Shibata in 54.30 seconds on firm.
Second was, a 1/2-length behind, Fukuno Dream with another neck further away Earth Sonic third in the reduced field of 12.
Seiko Raiko, a 7-year-old bay horse by Kurofune out of the Sunday Silence mare Fine Seiko, has now notched his seventh win in 24 career starts.

Two stars back in training

Gold Ship was back in training after a summer rest, cantering a 1,000-meter in 63.90 seconds at Ritto hill track last Friday. He will move to Hakodate Racecourse next Thursday. 

In the meantime, Harp Star appeared on the Sapporo Racecourse last Thursday for the first time since moving in the venue, cantering slowly around the track. 

The two will clash at the grade two Sapporo Kinen on August 24.

Queen Stakes preview

A field is set to run for Sunday's grade three Queen Stakes at Sapporo. The 14 fillies and mares will go to post for the 1,800-meter contest at 3:25 p.m. JST on Sunday, Aug. 3.

Smart Layer returned to this season with a couple of victories at grade level and may find a good spot after failing to produce the desired result at g1 event last outing. In absence of Yutaka Take, Kenichi Ikezoe will ride.

Dia de la Madre showed good form with the g3 Mermaid Stakes victory last time out. Reproduction of that run could see her go close to the line.

Aromatico showed a return to good form when winning the Tomoe Sho last time out and could produce another big run.

Quatre Feuilles has recorded a couple of runner-ups at grade races and could spot a good chance here after  finishing a respectable fifth in the g1 Victoria Mile.

Otsu comes here with three consecutive victories and will step up the class to have a testing contest.

The grade three IBIS Summer Dash to which a total of 13 runners have been entered is run at Niigata over 1,000 meters on turf.  The post time will be at 3:45 p.m. JST on Sunday, Aug. 3.

Forever Mark, second in this race last year, may find his way to the winning form this time after finishing fifth in the Hakodate Sprint.
Seiko Raiko keeps in good form having come off a promising fourth in the Hakodate Sprint.
Little Gerda(USA) returns to his favorite course(5-2-1-2-0) and makes his first start since finishing third in the Silkroad Stakes.
