Flashback: 2000 NHK Mile Cup

The 5th NHK Mile Cup: May 7, 2000

Eagle Cafe wins Mile Cup in photo finish
The NHK Mile Cup was won a final stride by second pick Eagle Cafe(USA), who beat fifth pick Toyo Dehere(USA) by a nose, with Machikane Hokushin(USA) another one and a three-quarter lengths away third. Sixth pick Mr.Southpaw was fourth with third pick Sweet Orchid fifth in the field of 18 3-year-olds.

It was such a thrilling and close finish of the first two that their finishing of orders were not determined until a photo comfirmation. The winner completed a 1,600-meter turf in 1:33.5 on firm grass. It was the first grade one victory to trainer Futoshi Kojima.

The field, led by Yuma, Maltese Superb(USA) and Neo Polis, entered into the 500-meter stretch. Eagle Cafe and Toyo Dehere raced side by side in the middle of the big pack until each took its own route to the finish line before going up the hill. Jockey Hiroki Goto took Toyo Dehere to the middle running through the crowd. While, a veteran jockey Yukio Okabe sent Eagle Cafe into the outside. Toyo Dehere, running second off the rail, went into a lead at around 200-meter to go after climbing up the hill. Eagle Cafe challenged Toyo Dehere on the far outside. The two, lining up separately at quite a large interval, fought it out for the rest of the way. Machikane Hokushin, ridden by Yutaka Take, made a good effort to come from well behind, but was not able to catch the first two.

Bred by E.J.Hudson, Jr. Irrevocable Trust & W.S.Kilroy in USA, Eage Cafe(by Gulch, out of Net Dancer, by Nureyev) is owned by Kiyoshi Nishikawa and has now won three races of seven starts with a career earnings of more than 163 million yen.
