Makahiki wins Japan Derby in thrilling photo finish

Makahiki with Yuga Kawada up put up a great turn of foot in the stretch to win the Tokyo Yushun(Japanese Derby) in photo finish on Sunday at Tokyo Racecourse. He won it by a nose from Satono Diamond in 2 minutes 24 seconds flat over 2,400 meters on firm ground.
A 1/2-length behind the runner-up, Dee Majesty came third with Air Spinel fourth and Leontes fifth.
The first five of the Satsuki Sho(Japanese 2000 Guineas) also occupied the first five of the Japanese Derby, but this time they were in a different finishing order.

After leaving the 200-meter pole, Makahiki and Satono Diamond drew away from the rest. From there, they emgered in a thrilling neck and neck battle to the finish line. On the far outside, Dee Majesty chased after them, but never stepped in the shadow of them.

Trained by Y. Tomomichi and owned Kaneko Makoto Holdings Ltd., Makahiki has now won four of his five races with more than 360 million jpn yen in career earnings.
Makahiki, a 3-year-old bay colt by Deep Impact out of the French Deputy mare Wikiwki, was bred by Northern Farm.
